of a chicago teenager is at $40,000. there was a march saturday in memory of hadiya pendleton. the 15-year-old was shot and killed tuesday in a park with her friends. i want to bring in reverend al sharpton, host of msnbc's "politics nation." also president of the national action network as well. let's talk about hadiya first. recently got back from washington. she just performed at president obama's inauguration. for folks who don't know the story, who aren't familiar with this little girl, what can you tell us? >> 15 years old, honor student. as you said, performed at the president's inaugural festivities. went home, was on her way in a month or so to paris. and was killed. apparently standing under a petition that was, you know, there for weather. and someone shot her. there with all kinds of theories of whether it was mistaken for gang warfare. she clearly had no involvement in any violence in her life, no gang warfare. in fact, had done a commercial against gang warfare. and had a mother on politics nation. >> i want to play that for our viewers. take a listen. >> her friend who was t
as much interest in hadiya pendleton the way she did. she was like, momma, i wanted people to feel how this happened, do you know this is going to happen, and, you know, she just had a lot of questions about life and death, i mean, because all you see around. >> so obviously another tragic murder in the city of chicago highlighting the president's call to end the gun violence, and we should say, craig, when president obama spoke in chicago, he really called for a broad approach to ending the violence, not just through stiffer legislation, but also by investing in communities, investing in early education, investing in families. now, of course, the president is also calling for stiffer gun laws, things like reinstating the ban on assault weapon, limiting high capacity magazines and expanding universal background checks. it is thought that the majority of those proposals are going to have a really tough time getting through congress. however, it appears as though something like universal background checks might have more bipartisan support than some of the other proposals that president

the newtown tragedy to the hadiya pendleton shooti shooting, the 15-year-old girl shot in chicago, the president has made this very personal. at this point politically. what type of legislation can he realistically get through congress? >> well at this point not too much has changed on the hill since this issue began being raised at the beginning of this congress. right now universal background checks remain the one part of that whole agenda that really seems like the most politically feasible. what i found really interesting in what the president talked about on friday, though, he did bring that gun control message to chicago, a place where he obviously has a long history. >> yes. >> and has lived for many years. when he was talking about that, he brought the issue of newtown into it saying the number of gun deaths you'll have in the city of chicago would equal four newtowns a year and linked it to his personal experience of a son as a single mother, it's not just about gun violence in these communities, it's really about the issues of family. it's something that i think you saw
